Podiatrist- Approved Footwear
Footwear choices are a critical and poorly appreciated factor in the manament of most foot and ankle conditions. Choosing the right shoe for your needs is essential, and almost as important as any other part of your treament.
Our podiatrists will guide you towards the right shoe designs, brands and features for your needs, and often refer you to our network of trusted footwear retailers and suppliers around Brisbane.
The Podiatry Practice also stocks a selected range of approved footwear for men and women, simplifying finding shoes for orthotics or difficult-to-fit feet. We supply Dr Comfort, Revere, Anodyne, and Vionic, featuring full-length removable insoles and various widths.
Soft Vs. Hard Orthotics?
There is can be some confusion and mistaken beliefs about what type of orthotic you might need to treat a foot or leg condition. Many choices exist, and there are a significant number of variables that will influence the advice we give on the types of materials best suited to your needs. Sometimes there can be more than one approach that is appropriate. Often, especially with chronic conditions, your needs will change over time and with age.
Almost the most important factor is that your orthotics need to be totally comfortable and sit easily within the recommended footwear for your needs. When wearing prescription orthoses, ideally they should something that you give very little thought to throughout the day - just like wearing prescription glasses.
Orthotic design and function, not just the materials, determine the optimal outcome. There is no 'one size fits all' approach. We use different styles (rigid and soft/flexible) to alter forces and stresses on tissues, either to change foot posture or to modify internal loads to heal injuries.
