Shockwave Therapy for Lower Extremity Pain

Shockwave therapy is a relative new form of ultrasound physical therapy. It originated from large lithotripsy machines which are commonly used in hospital to treat and 'break up' kidney stones.

Newer, compact radial shockwave therapy (or radial pressure wave therapy) machines are now available to private clinics, providing an affordable community-based solution for soft tissue issues.

The Podiatry Practice has invested in the Gymna Shockmaster 500 to provide treatment for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis and other ligament and tendon complaints.

How Shockwave Works

Shockwave therapy involved the use of pressurised ultrasonic sound waves, which are directed into injured tissues. It works by improving blood flow and promoting the natural healing process of injured tissues.

We invested in the Gymna ShockMaster 500 unit after seeing growing evidence and very strong research results in the scientific literature. We have found shockwave therapy to be an essential tool in our management of musculoskeletal pain. It is particularly effective for chronic conditions like recalcitrant plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Conditions Treated

We typically use shockwave therapy for chronic conditions present for several months. Common problems identified in medical research to be assisted by shockwave therapy include:

  • Plantar fasciitis / fasciosis
  • Achilles tendonitis and tears
  • Tendinopathies, such as posterior tibial tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage to the extremities)

Treatment is generally not painful and the duration of a session lasts only a few minutes per cycle, and intensity can be adjusted for your comfort.
