Podiatrist Approved Footwear
Footwear choices are a critical and poorly appreciated factor in the manament of most foot and ankle conditions. Choosing the right shoe for your needs is essential, and almost as important as any other part of your treament.
Our podiatrists will guide you towards the right shoe designs, brands and features for your needs, and often refer you to our network of trusted footwear retailers and suppliers around Brisbane.
The Podiatry Practice also stocks a selected range of approved footwear for men and women, simplifying finding shoes for orthotics or difficult-to-fit feet. We supply Dr Comfort, Revere, Anodyne, and Vionic, featuring full-length removable insoles and various widths.
Soft Versus Hard Orthotics?
There can sometimes be confusion and about what type of orthotic style you might need to treat a foot or leg condition. There is rarely a 'one size fits all' solution.
Many options exist, and there are a number of variables that influence the advice we give on the types of materials best suited to your needs. Sometimes there can be more than one approach that is appropriate, and often multiple materials used.
Often, especially with chronic conditions, your needs will change over time and with age.
Almost the most important factor (beyond addressing your problem) is that it is absolutely essential that your orthotics are completely comfortable. They should sit easily in your footwear, and not affect the overall fit of the shoe significantly.
When wearing prescription foot orthoses, ideally they should something that you should generally have very little awareness of throughout the day - just like wearing prescription eyewear and glasses.
Orthotic design and function, not just the materials, determine the most optimal outcome. We use many different types of materials to alter forces and stresses on tissues, either to change foot posture or to modify internal loads to heal injuries.
After many years of trialing different orthotic laboratories, materials and methodologies, we chose to invest in our Swiss/German Orthema orthotic milling system. This allows us to produce custom-made flexible, full length EVA orthotic devices in a variety of densities, on-site with our CAD/CAM milling machine.
